About This Spot

Stepping into Sambo's Tavern feels like arriving at a cherished local hideaway where the river’s rhythm sets a gentle, unhurried pace. Nestled on the waterfront in Leipsic, this tavern hums with the quiet energy of regulars and seafood lovers who know that here, meals are shared moments, not rushed transactions. The space itself is intimate and straightforward—a no-frills kind of spot where conversation flows as easily as the crisp draft beers.

The atmosphere is one of relaxed focus on good food and genuine company, a cozy refuge where adults come to unwind in the company of freshly steamed crabs and the briny goodness of oysters and clams. There’s an unmistakable sense that the seafood served here is deeply tied to the water just outside, where the owner’s crab boat gently rocks nearby. It’s a place where smells of the sea and the subtle spice from the kitchen mingle, drawing you into a simple yet satisfying experience.

The menu doesn’t overwhelm but invites discovery in how it honors the delicate flavors of each dish. The crabs arrive generously seasoned and cooked with a careful hand—not just about getting the job done but about celebrating the craft behind each bite. Whether you’re breaking apart a soft shell crab sandwich or savoring a hearty crab cake, there’s a respectful attention to texture and taste, enhanced by unique touches like the subtle use of Himalayan pink salt or the option of a local IPA to wash it all down.

Sambo’s is not the sort of place for bustling crowds or family outings with young children; rather, it’s a spot for those seeking an authentic, down-to-earth seafood experience in a tavern that feels rooted in its community and landscape. The service strikes a nice balance of friendly and efficient, embodying the easy hospitality that invites you in like an old friend sharing not just food but a story of place and people.

Went here for my birthday meal last week and loved it. As a non local we hadn't much experience with these crabs but our server was happy to help teach us. The seasoning they put on them here is perfect! And the crabs were a really good size and delicious.

I can't imagine a better place for crabs. They are simply delicious. The crab boat, run by the owner's son, is docked 20 ft from the tavern. See photo. If you're thinking about visiting Sambo's Tavern, just do it and thank me later.

Awesome little tavern! The food was excellent, the staff was pleasant and very welcoming, and the service was on point. I've tried the Crab bisque, Crab cakes( lump meat with very little filler), fried flounder, pasta salad, and potato salad...nothing disappointed, everything was fresh and prepared nicely. I will definitely be returning soon. Overall, great little tavern with fresh seafood prepared perfectly.

Best crab spot! Pink Himalayan salt is a unique take on how to prepare crabs, but don’t be fooled! It tenderizes, and makes the crabs so tasty! Highly recommend! Great view over the riverbank too! Cash only btw, and it’s for adults only!

Food and view of the water were great, but the best part was the absolutely delightful employees! Highly recommend. To note: they are cash only, but they do have an ATM. They also check IDs at the door. Lots of big tables to accommodate larger groups.

This was a great recommendation from a friend who lives in Dover. I was looking for some seafood and they didn't disappoint. Flounder was really good and the clam chowder. Lots of people loving crab and smashing shells to get to the meat. Cash only place but an atm located inside. Nice view with the river and marsh. Friendly service and nice local folk who make you feel welcomed.

Sambo's is a tavern so it is not going for Michelin stars. But the food is excellent and the wait staff helpful and pleasant. Was a reunion of college friends, and some shared a dozen crabs. We all had something different and good to eat. Walked in without a reservation but there was plenty of room for 7 and don't think we bothered the other patrons. Only down side is taking g ONLY CASH but we knew that ahead of time and it does help keep the cost down.
